CARROT

Nantik Resistafly F1
Early-ripe hybrid, resistant to carrot fly damage. The vegetation period is 85-90 days from germination to full ripeness. The root crop is of a cylindrical shape, bright orange color, smooth, 16-18 cm in length, 3,5 cm in diameter, and 90-110 g in mass, almost entirely grounded into the soil. The top part of the root crop is without an antocian mark, the core is small and orange. The taste qualities are astonishing, recommended for fresh consumption and storage. Resistant to blossoming. Harvest productivity 7-8 kg/m2.

CARROT'S RESISTANCE to carrot fly damage.

PREFACE of Agro Firm "Semco-Junior",
We are happy to present to the gardener's attention Nantik Resistafly, the first and only carrot resistant to carrot fly. Also we have an opportunity to offer you an article published by the researchers of Plant Protection Research Institute (St.  Petersburg) "CARROT'S RESISTANS TO CARROT FLY AND CARROT WEEVIL, AND WAYS TO INCREASE IT." (in Russian).

This plant is genetically resistant to diseases that are well known to our readers. However in the new season, we decided to extend our carrot hybrid assortment and the new addition is a hybrid unresponsive to wreckers like carrot fly. Specialists at agro firm "Semco-Junior" became interested in such a biological phenomenon, and so they recommended that we publish an article by the researchers of Plant Protection Research Institute of Russia on plant protection mechanisms promoting plant resistance to insect wreckers.

The selection process was preceded by the evaluation of different grade types of carrots' resistance to insect wreckers. In result several grade types were chosen for their resistance levels and plant stability. The nature of plant resistance mechanism of the plant ended up being complex and difficult to figure out. Sugar and carotene levels in the root and chlorogenic acid level in the leaves directly affected crop's resistance. The higher the levels of sugar and carotene in the crop; the lower is the possibility of nutrition gain for the maggots. Meanwhile the lower is the concentration of chlorogenic acid; the less attractive is the crop to the female fly. Once the chlorogenic acid evaporates from the leaves, it creates a cloud of fume that attracts the carrot fly to the crop. The more crowded is the cultivation area, the less aeration it receives; as a result the carrot fly is more attracted by the fume. Therefore, the root crops with low concentration of chlorogenic acids are less attractive to the female fly that lays maggots in soil surrounded by the fume of the crops. If maggots are laid, they mature later on penetrate the root crop. If levels of carotene and sugars in the crop are high, the crop is less suitable for the maggots' nourishment, and therefore the maggots will soon seize to exist.
Our selectors were able to obtain carrot sorts and hybrids resistant to carrot fly; furthermore, the more vitamin-enhanced and tasty was the crop, the less was its attractiveness to the insect wreckers. Agrofirm "Semco-Junior" is happy to present a dinner carrot hybrid, resistant to carrot fly damage-hybrid F1 Nantik Resistafly. It belongs to the Nantes sort family; the root crop is 16-18cm in length and has a small inner core. Particularly these types of root crop are less attractive to the insect wreckers. The hybrid is unique in its taste qualities and high carotene concentration of the root, in combination with low chlorogenic acid levels in the leaves, (less than 2mg/100g in the row material) and that is the reason why the crops do not attract female flies. Utilizing Nantik Resistafly F1 hybrid will decrease production losses due to insect wreckers and as a result will allow reduction of carrot-seedling.

In order to justify the transition from common carrot crop cultivation to genetically resistant sorts and hybrids, Agro Firm "Semco-Junior" recommends an article by B. Asyakina and O. Ivanova, researchers of Plant Protection Research Institute (St. Petersburg), "CARROT'S RESISANS TO CARROT FLY AND CARROT WEEVIL, AND WAYS TO INCREASE IT". (in Russian)
