Analysis of hybrids of tomato and cucumber in the region of the Dnieper, 2011.

In late May, we organized a traditional meeting with the farmers of the Kamenka-Dneprovskaya and the Vodyano-town of Zaporozhye region. Here the position of our company's traditionally strong, many farmers we know personally. For 10 years, the seeds of our hybrids of tomatoes and cucumbers are in great demand from farmers. Meeting in Ukraine, we began with the Donetsk region, where we first visited Donetsk experimental greenhouse complex. For the second year in its greenhouses, farmers grow hybrid tomatoes: F1 Gilgal, F1 Pink Spam, F1 Cherry Ira, F1 Cherry Kira in the second turn. This year, the plant management decided to plant an area of 3 ha large-fruited tomatoes F1 Malik and F1 Gilgal in the first turn and the second turn. Last year's experience showed the chief agronomist Gennady Kuzhel that our hybrids are very reliable. Reliability is now a very important quality, because many hybrids are suffering from viral diseases, and this is reflected in the quality and quantity of the crop. Hybrids, which the company offers, resistant to the largest number of viral diseases. Therefore, the plants, planted in the 2nd turn, will not suffer from bronzing and yellow leaf roll.
Each farmer in the company chooses its time for sowing seeds of summer-autumn turnover. Timing of sowing depends on the results of the previous turn. Of great importance is respect for the technological requirements and weather conditions. The earlier culture will be planted, the higher its yield. In July and August sales price of vegetables falls sharply, it makes the production of greenhouse vegetables uneconomic at this time. Increasing the price of vegetables in September, becomes visible, and in October, November and December the price is growing very quickly. Therefore, growers are trying to start collecting tomatoes and cucumbers in September. For this we must sow the seeds of tomatoes in early June, and planted seedlings to a permanent place in mid-July. Next are the most labor-intensive care (garter, Forming, watering, protection measures). Mid-July is a traditional vacations time, and this creates certain difficulties in the private sector in the production of vegetables. Therefore, many farmers prefer to shift the terms of seeding and transplanting at a later time, especially since the conditions of Ukraine allow the plant tomato seedlings to 20-25 July, and cucumbers - 25-30 July. However, there are farmers who planted the seeds of an even later date (early September). These farmers to produce good crops need to arrange additional lighting for late planting. In this case, you can get fresh tomatoes in January.

During the fall turn the hybrids relating generally to the group LSL-tomato hybrids as our F1 Longf, F1 Shelf, and F1 Life of F1 Simon with a long storage period has the advantage of regular tomatoes. But they have one peculiarity - the fruit should get the red color being on the plants, as if to collect them early, they will not gain a bright red color. Personal experience shows that large fruits regular tomato, collected early in the refrigerator can maintain marketability more than a month, and while in storage, they become red.
It is in this case, the advantage of hybrids are capable in low light, observed in autumn, recruit bright red color. Not all hybrids of tomatoes are capable of it. That's why we offer a hybrid tomato F1 Malika and F1 Gilgal for growers of southern Russia and Ukraine, as they have not only high yield and disease resistance, but are able to please consumers with bright red, beautiful and large fruits during autumn and winter season.

The second meeting was held on the fields in the area Orekhov Zaporozhye region. There have already been constructed plastic greenhouses, which are planned to grow tomatoes second turn. Ivan Oleshenko agreed with us and is ready to grow tomatoes F1 Gilgal and F1 Malik in his greenhouses. On the field he grows cabbage hybrids F1 Prestige and F1 Valentine, sown directly into open ground. Ivan Oleshenko noted the excellent germination and seed vigor.

Continuing the journey along the left bank of the Dnepr, we had several meetings with farmers from the Kamenka-Dneprovskaya and Vodyano. Tatiana Pupko organized meeting and conference. Our conversation with farmers lasted two hours. During this time we gave a detailed account of our new range of vegetable seeds (Yuri Alekseev), features technology for growing vegetable crops (Askar Akhatov) and on biosecurity plants from pests and diseases (Nikolai Teteruk). We discussed many issues related to the advantage we offer hybrid tomato, pepper and cucumber, and answered questions related to plant diseases in this period of growth. As a result of the meeting we have received orders for seeds for the second turn.
It was once again drawn attention to the need to respect the rules landing - the seedlings of hybrids F1 Gilgal and F1 Malik should not exceed 3 plants per 1 sq.m. The concentration of the nutrient solution for F1 Gilgal should be increased by about 25%, which also will secure the density and the color of the fruits. The second hybrid, F1 Malika, have grown as normal indeterminate tomato, just remember that ripening its fruit about the same as in the hybrid F1 Platus, approximatly 95 days. High night temperatures contributes to a significant lengthening of the internode, therefore it is desirable to maintain it at 15-16°C. These conditions also favor the growth of larger fruits, which is especially desirable for the second turn.

In this region there are increasing of incidences of bacterial diseases of tomatoes. The reasons are: unchangeable growing of one crop, the proximity of a large reservoir (Kakhovske reservoir) and a low level of agricultural technology. It should be noted that for a long time the range of tomato hybrids remained practically unchanged. Growing varieties with a small range of disease resistance of tomato is also adversely affected the overall picture. Our company offering a new generation of hybrids with a wide range of disease resistant tomatoes, including the majority of viruses and bacterial diseases prevalent in the southern region. Over 2 years of tests conducted by our company, we have not observed any incidents of bacteriosis in hybrids F1 Gilgal, F1 Malika, F1 Drive. Therefore, our recommendation is to replace the variety of the cultivated tomato and proper use of drugs against bacterial diseases. We recommend to process before sowing the seeds with the drug Fitolavin (20 ml/kg seed), spray to prevent the young seedlings with 0,2% solution of the same drug, spray the soil before sowing seeds with drug Planriz, spray seedlings with drug Alirin or Gamair. After planting young plants to a permanent place it is recommended to periodically spray the plants with these biological drugs. If the first symptoms of disease occurs it is best to remove diseased plants and the neighboring plants should be sprayed with 0,2% solution of the drug Fitolavin. We should not forget to spray with copper specimens plants and soil as well.
In this region, the second turn grow not only tomatoes, but the cucumbers as well. A few years the hybrid cucumber F1 Temp is in a high demand. The fruits of this great hybrid parthenocarpic can be harvesting as early as 40-41 days after sprouting. Fruiting continues up until early November. High yield and stability of this complex hybrid to several diseases makes it extreamly profitable. On the right bank of the Dnieper, in the village Auly of Dnepropetrovsk region this hybrid successfully grown in the first turn along with extended turn. A farmer with minimal care in greenhouses produced an excellent crop of hybrid rate at the end of May, more than 12 кг/м2, and projection to produce at least 24 кг/м2 by the fall. For the farmers attention our company offers two new hybrids of cucumber as well: F1 Twenty and F1 Alliance Plus.

In the region of the Dnieper yield of some vegetable crops are slightly behind compare to last year's results. This is due to prolonged cloudy weather and unstable, and sometimes low temperatures during the spring. In the village Auly farmers are grown mainly determinate tomato hybrids (F1 Kate, F1 Semko 18 and others), which they are already used to. Ukrainian farmers felt that they had already learned how to grow these hybrids. But it's not so easy! Many of the problems associated with the traditions: people somehow believe that each year it should take its course and make adjustments in the technology is not necessary. But this year, this approach did not work. Determinate hybrids grown in the low "galleries", were more sensitive to climatic turbulences. As a result, the growth of plants was different from the usual: many fruit disappeared or were not fastened properly, little fruits in the first two clusters; therefore the vegetative mass was increased dramatically, which was slow foundation of new fruits and rate of maturation. At the end there will be shortage of early and total of fruit yield. We advised to reduce organic fertilizers under tomato plants and to coordinate technological works with the weather conditions along with the condition of the plants.
As a result, for 3 days we were able to visit farmers in Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions within a distance of 1,500 km. We saw the state of proprietary hybrid planted tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and cabbage; consulted people; discussed their opinion on varietal composition and gave relevant advices to farmers on the selection of crops and hybrids for the second turn; learned the technology of their cultivation; advised them the ways to protect crops from pests and diseases.
